(Photo: Clariant)Clariant gives the recycling potential of black plastics a much-needed boost. At K 2019, it will launch the first range of near infrared (NIR)-detectable black pigments and dyes applicable to a wide variety of recyclable plastics. The extension adds another step in the right direction addressing the sorting challenge of high-appeal black packaging for recovery and recycling facilities.

(Photo: Mondi, PR136)Leading global packaging and paper group Mondi, in cooperation with chemical producer BASF and COROOS, one of the biggest European companies in the preservation of fruits, vegetables and pulses for premium A-brands and private label products, have cooperated on a state-of-the-art pilot project. Together they produced a stand-up pouch that is safe for food contact partly made with raw material which was derived from chemically recycled plastic. Until now, recycling plastic has chiefly been mechanical, limiting the scope of plastics that can be recycled and limiting the number of products that can be created with recycled material, in particular for the strict legal European regulations in place for food packaging.

Clariant maintains a strong patent position in phosphinate based flame retardants and continues to take legal action against infringers

(Photo: Shutterstock)Despite Clariant’s significant worldwide intellectual property (IP) position related to phosphinate flame retardant products, we are concerned that some polymer compounders and Original Equip-ment Manufacturers (OEMs) are considering local Chinese suppliers for diethylphosphinate alu-minium salt (DEPAL) based flame retardants. This class of halogen free flame retardants, often combined with nitrogen containing and inorganic synergists, have become workhorses in engi-neering thermoplastics, mainly glass filled polyamides and polyesters, but also epoxy resins. Clariant has been developing and advancing this technology for over two decades, so that our pa-tented Exolit® OP flame retardants have become the benchmark in quality and performance for phosphinate flame retardants in the market.
