Borealis unveils its new CO2e emissions calculation tool Neoni at the K 2022

  • New digital tool is first in the industry to offer grade-specific calculations for polyolefins
  • Neoni to contain cradle-to-gate CO2e emissions data for over 500 Borealis grades produced in Europe

Borealis announces the launch of Neoni, a new carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions calculator developed by the Borealis Digital Studio. The digital tool is the first in the industry to offer CO2e emissions data down to the grade level for polyolefins. Neoni – which will be showcased in its demo version at the K 2022 – will in the beginning contain calculations for approximately 500 Borealis polyolefins grades manufactured at Borealis locations in Europe. In line with the EverMinds™ approach to accelerating circularity by way of value chain collaboration, Neoni will enable Borealis customers to make informed decisions on which materials can best meet their own circularity goals.

Digital tool Neoni heightens transparency of CO2e emissions data

As the first industry tool to break down CO2e emissions by product grade, Neoni unites the strategic key elements of digitalisation and circularity to provide more transparency to Borealis customers in the decision-making process.

Created by the in-house Borealis Digital Studio based in Brussels, Belgium, Neoni is populated by data on hundreds of grades from Borealis portfolios, with additional commercial products being added in successive stages to the tool. Neoni thus presents CO2e emissions for a wide range of materials, from virgin, fossil feedstock-based solutions, to renewable feedstock-based grades in the Bornewables™ portfolio of circular polyolefins, but also among those in the Borcycle™ portfolio of mechanically recycled polyolefins.

Neoni offers a partial carbon footprint of products from Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) in the form of cradle-to-gate CO2e emissions1. In other words, the calculation includes all CO2e emissions incurred up to the moment the grade leaves Borealis facilities, whereby the tool will soon offer customers the option to calculate additional CO2e emissions incurred from Borealis to their own operations, thus further enhancing its usefulness. Neoni will be rolled out towards the end of the year, at which time the number of Borealis grades contained in the tool will have reached over 500. In addition to polyolefins grades, data on hydrocarbons will also be added. The results from the tool will be accessible to individual customers on the MyBorealis platform.
